There should be no film censorship: Anurag Kashyap

Mumbai, Nov 4 – Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap feels there should be no film censorship at all. Even as he tries to push the boundaries, he says in India it’s not easy to make films criticising real life politicians or to even use the term ’sex’.

‘There shouldn’t be any censorship on making a film. We are still very conservative about the term sex,’ Kashyap, known for experimental films like ‘Dev D’, told IANS on the sidelines of the 11th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF).

‘I am trying to push my boundaries so that everything in the film looks real.’

Kashyap, who has always framed real life incidents through his film like ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Gulaal’, wonders if he could make a film like Gabriel Range’s ‘Death of A President’.

”Death of A President’ was made with President George Bush still alive, but we can’t introduce a scene where four people are chatting over tea and cursing politician Raj Thackeray,’ says Kashyap.

The 37-year-old director believes recession has been good for Bollywood.

‘Recession has cut Bollywood into shape. Miscellaneous expenses were more than the actual cost of the film. Recession helped in cutting down the fat,’ says Kashyap.

He believes there are fewer producers for bold or out-of-the-box movies.

‘There is a scarcity of producers who can risk new ideas. Most of the producers are businessmen and they look for recovery. So they invest only if they are convinced that the story will sell,’ says Kashyap.

‘I always make a film on a tight budget, so UTV has signed me for nine films,’ said Kashyap. When asked about his forthcoming project, ‘Udaan’, he says, ‘I have finished shooting the film.’

Talking about the ongoing Mumbai festival, where he is planning to see a couple of movies, he regretted that movies were getting only one screening there.

‘At any other film festival there is at least two to three screenings of every film. MFF is the first place where there is only one screening. People should complain about it,’ says Kashyap.

New Delhi, Nov 4 – ‘Dev D’ actress Mahie Gill, whose kitty is full, with five films for the coming year, says she feels incapable of doing a comedy.

‘I am very scared of doing comedies. I always wonder: will I ever be able to do it or not. But I still want to try it some day. I want to come out of my comfort zone and try to do something I don’t find easy,’ said Mahie.

The actress will be exploring various genres in upcoming films like ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, ‘Dabang’, ‘Bhaang’, ‘Surmai Shaam’ and ‘Gulaab Gang’ among others.

My son gives me tips: David Dhawan

New Delhi, Nov 4 – Even though director David Dhawan has spent more than two decades in the Hindi film industry, he has no qualms admitting that his 25-year-old son, an aspiring director, gives him tips for his movies.

‘I don’t give any tips to my son; he is the one who gives me tips for my films. His vision and imagination is something different and out of the box. I’m sure he will make a very polished film that has everything, good story, entertainment and emotions,’ Dhawan told IANS.

The filmmaker’s son, Rohit, is in the process of making his directorial debut in the coming year.

Mom biggest fan, dad biggest critic: Ranbir Kapoor

New Delhi, Nov 4 – Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor, who belongs to a family of great actors and filmmakers, says while his mother Neetu Kapoor is his biggest fan, his father Rishi Kapoor is his biggest critic.

‘My mom is my biggest fan, but my father is my biggest critic,’ Ranbir told IANS.

‘He is someone who will call a spade a spade and is not afraid of hurting anyone because he is very correct when opinions are concerned and I am really happy that I have someone like him in my life who will tell me when I’m bad and when I’m good,’ he said.

Ranbir, who has acted in films like ‘Saawariya’, ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ and ‘Wake UP Sid’ will be next seen opposite Katrina Kaif in the romantic comedy ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, slated to release Nov 6.

Kareena and I were depressed during ‘Kurbaan’ shoot: Saif Khan

Mumbai, Nov 4 – Bollywood actors often describe their shooting schedule as a picnic. But ‘cold and depressing’ is what Saif Ali Khan has to say about the US shoot of ‘Kurbaan’, speaking for not just himself but also girlfriend and co-star Kareena Kapoor.

‘ ‘Kurbaan’ was hard work. Period. In fact, the Philadelphia schedule was plain hell. It wasn’t anything like a picnic shooting for the film,’ shudders Saif, who is glad that the film is complete and ready for release.

Saif says, ‘It gets dark there at 4 p.m. itself. Moreover, it’s so cold and at minus 10 degrees it can actually get really depressing. Since we were shooting in sync sound, it was extremely difficult to get the pitch and tone right while delivering our dialogues.’

The film by Rensil D’Souza also stars Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Om Puri and Kirron Kher and will be released Nov 20.

It was during the shoot of the film that Saif and Kareena got news of the terror attack in Mumbai last year. ‘Because of that, it was so difficult to concentrate on the film’s shoot. Thankfully, Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) was there with me at that time but still both of us were very depressed,’ says Saif.

As it was quite cold in Philadelphia, Saif and Kareena were required to wear layers of clothing. Later, for continuity purpose, they had to wear the same clothes in the summer of Mumbai.

Saif and others also had a hard time adjusting to the locations chosen for the film’s shoot.

‘We were shooting in a tube and that’s anything but fun,’ he remembers. ‘We had to shoot a subway sequence but being in a tube for hours at a stretch is like being in an underground prison. Really, it is very disorienting. Who says shooting for a film is like being in a picnic? ‘Kurbaan’ certainly wasn’t one.’

When asked to name one film which was fun to shoot, Saif talks of Abbas-Mustan-directed ‘Race’.

‘Now that’s what I call as a real picnic’, he says. ‘Doing the film was quite easy since the working hours were quite comfortable while locations were nice, easy and comfortable. It was really simple work and I enjoyed a lot. It was really entertaining to drive fast cars, saying cool lines, be a hero and stuff alike.

‘On the other hand, ‘Kurbaan’ has me playing this complicated character which only makes it further difficult for an actor.’

‘New York’ to open Cairo film fest

New Delhi, Nov 3 – Yash Raj Films’ ‘New York’ has been selected as the opening film at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) 2009.

The film will also compete in the ‘In Competition’ section at the fest, to be held Nov 10-Nov 20.

Directed by Kabir Khan who will also attend the event, the film stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh in the lead apart from Irrfan Khan in a pivotal role.

Recently screened at the Pusan International Film Festival, ‘New York’ released over 900 screens worldwide on June 26 this year. It is a contemporary story of three young friends whose lives are turned upside down by post-9/11 prejudices.

Also attending the festival will be Hollywood stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Lucy Liu and Tom Berenger.

‘London Dreams’, ‘Aladin’ don’t cast spell over box office

New Delhi, Nov 3 – The Ajay Devgn-Salman Khan starrer ‘London Dreams’ and Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Aladin’ have failed to send the cash registers ringing in the first week of their release.

Despite being big budget outings, both movies have failed to bring in footfalls. This is the third week in succession post Diwali that saw the release of disappointing content after movies like ‘Blue’, ‘All The Best – Fun Begins’ and ‘Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna’.

”London Dreams’ and ‘Aladin’ both have been losers in terms of recovering production costs. They don’t seem to be recovering even half of the costs. It is again a bad phase for Bollywood – this time post-Diwali, as no movie is able to perform on merit,’ Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor told IANS.

‘Even forthcoming movies ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani’ and ‘Jail’ that release this Friday, are only limited for multiplexes and have not generated any buzz,’ he added.

Amit Shah, chief manager (programming) of DLF DT cinemas was also of the same opinion.

”Aladin’ has been a disaster both content and collections wise while the maximum response has been for ‘London Dreams’ though even it has been only average and not as expected. Both movies are over now in terms of business, as they have brought in whatever they could over an extended weekend,’ said Shah.

‘Now, much is expected from ‘Ajab Prem Ki…’ though ‘Jail’ will start slow but considering it’s a Madhur Bhandarkar film, it just might pick up,’ he added.

Produced and directed by Vipul Shah, ‘London Dreams’ stars Asin Thottumkal as the female lead. Rannvijay Singh and Om Puri too feature in pivotal roles about the story of friendship with a musical background.

On the other hand, ‘Aladin’, a contemporary take on the classic fairy tale has been directed by Sujoy Ghosh and produced by Sunil Lulla and Ghosh himself.

It stars Riteish Deshmukh in the lead opposite debutante Jacqueline Fernandez. Amitabh Bachchan stars as a genie in the movie while Sanjay Dutt essays a negative role.

”Aladin’ is a flop film and ‘London Dreams’ has done just average business… We are hoping ‘Ajab Prem…’ should open well, as it is a family oriented comedy while ‘Jail’ has its own audience,’ said a source from PVR cinemas.

‘From Blighty With Love’ Fest to start Feb 26

Mumbai, Nov 3 – The ‘From Blighty with Love’ Festival to showcase recent independent British films across Indian screens will commence Feb 26 next year.

Announced at the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival (MFF), which runs Oct 29-Nov 5, the British-Indian film distribution initiative will be held simultaneously across Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune till March 11, 2010.

The gala will also see a ‘virtual’ in-conversation with key talents from each film via the Skype technology.

”From Blighty with Love’ is an exciting example of the UK Film Council’s drive to open up UK film to international markets and audiences. It will showcase some of the best UK independent features of the last 18 months none of which have ever been seen on the big screen before in India,’ Sarah McKenzie, senior executive for export development of the UK Film Council, said in a statement.

Some of the movies that will be screened at the event include ‘Easy Virtue’, ‘Brideshead Revisited’, ‘Man On Wire’ and ‘In the Loop’, etc apart from those of renowned filmmakers like Michael Winterbottom, Sally Potter and Danny Boyle.

‘From Blighty with Love’ will be delivered by the UK Film Council with the help of project partners, UK Trade and Investment, MFF, Book My Show and Reliance Media Works. Property partners for the same include Big and Fame Cinemas.

‘Blighty’ is an English term for Britain, deriving from the Hindustani word vilayati.

Ben Kingsley to be guest of honour at IFFI

Panaji, Nov 3 – Noted British actor and Academy award winner Sir Ben Kingsley will be the guest of honour at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held later this month in Goa, state Chief Secretary Sanjiv Srivastava said Tuesday.

‘Sir Ben Kingsley will be coming. He will be our guest of honour at the inaugural ceremony of the 40th edition of the IFFI, which will be held in Panaji from Nov 23 onwards,’ Srivastava told reporters Tuesday evening, after attending a meeting of the governing council, which oversees the arrangements for the festival.

Sir Ben is well known for playing the role of Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough’s epic film ‘Gandhi’ in the early ’80s. The role earned the Yorkshire-born actor worldwide acclaim and an Oscar award for the best actor.

BAFTA, Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild award are other major motion picture awards won by Sir Ben.

‘Either Rajnikant himself, or a guest of his stature will inaugurate the festival,’ Srivastava added.

The chief secretary added that the programme for the IFFI was not finalized yet.

‘We are still working on it. The directorate of film festivals (DFF) has suggested some corrections and we are working on them. Since this is an international film festival, we are working to achieve the best standards,’ Srivastata said.

Lalit Modi gives nod for biopic

New Delhi, Nov 3 – Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi Tuesday gave his nod to Bollywood production house Percept Picture Company (PPC) for a ‘fictional biopic’ on his life, said a top official of PPC.

‘We had to wait for a bit but its through now. I had a meeting with him (Lalit Modi) in Mumbai at 11 in the morning and he is now very excited that he has committed for the film. It’s a fictional biopic like ‘Guru’ on Dhirubhai Ambani,’ joint managing director of PPC Shailendra Singh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

‘The film is a great mix of entertainment, sports and a whole emotional vibe. Lalit’s story has all the ingredients – rags to riches, fame, money and all that Indian audiences are going to enjoy watching. Indians at large would love to watch a good cricket marketing film,’ he added.

Titled ‘The Commissioner’, the script of the biopic is being written by Shridhar Raghavan and is ‘under development’.

‘We’ve got all the information and the research has been done. He (Raghavan) will take a couple of more months to be ready with the story and we should do the principal filming in 2010 and should be in a position to release the picture by end of the year,’ said Singh.

Asked about the director and the cast, he said: ‘We can’t announce the director yet because we are still to finalise the choice, as it’s first the script, then the director and then the casting for us. However, other than the lead, casting won’t be much of an issue.’

‘But the apt choice would be Shah Rukh Khan. He is India’s number one superstar and the minute we have the product in its true form of presentation, we would approach him for sure,’ he said.

Other actors in consideration for Modi’s role are ‘Irrfan Khan and Shahid Kapoor’.

Singh is also keeping a no holds barred budget for the film.

‘There will be no compromise in this film. Mr. Modi won’t allow me to compromise. It is a typical A-list Bollywood film but we can only get the true perspective of the costing once we have the script in hand,’ he said.

‘However, Lalit Modi practically lives in an aircraft, so that’s one of our headaches. In the IPL, he flew every evening and attended two press conferences in different cities. It involves a lot of filming,’ he added.

Is Modi also going to invest or appear in his life’s story?

‘He will have an option to invest financially if he chooses to… But the only appearance he is making is by allowing us to make the movie on him and subsequently by being present at the press conference to announce the same,’ said Singh.

Singh also hinted at a presence of major cricket players in the movie.

‘They are a part of the script because it happens to be based on IPL that has around 200 cricketers in it. They do happen to be a part of the cast unless any cricketer has a strict objection to being in the film,’ he said.
