New Delhi, Nov 3 – The little-known Vietnamese martial art sport Vovinam has fetched India seven medals in the ongoing Asian Indoor Games at Hanoi, Vietnam.

The seven-member Indian Vovinam team won one gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Pratiksha Santosh Shinde from Maharashtra was the star performer, winning one gold and three silver medals.

She won the team’s only gold in the single performance category.

Pratiksha, Rahul Kumar, Shashank Bajrang Kathade and Devrao Shankarrao Kapse got silver in the multiple attack technique.

In the dual sword form, Pratiksha and Akanksha Sahai got the country another silver medal.

Pratiksha’s third silver came in fights category.

The three bronze medals were cornered by Chongtham Mahadeva Singh and Deven Moirangthem, both from Manipur, in fights, and the team of Rahul, Devrao, Shashank Bajrang Kathade and Haobijam Kanta Singh in the men’s leg attack techniques.

‘The team has performed exceptionally well in the tournament. They have given their best and bagged seven medals,’ said President of Vovinam Association of India, Vishnu Sahai.

Australia fined for slow over rate

Mohali, Nov 3 – Australia have been fined for slow over rate during the fourth One-day international against India.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting was fined 20 percent of his match fee while his players were docked 10 percent. Australia defeated India by 24 runs at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here Monday.

Match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine after Ponting’s side was ruled to be two overs short of its target at the end of the match.

‘In accordance with the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct regulations governing over-rate penalties, players are fined five percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, while the captain is fined double that amount,’ ICC said in a statement.

Siddle new addition to Australia’s growing injury list

Mohali, Nov 3 – Fast bowler Peter Siddle has become the latest Australian to return home from the Indian tour because of a side strain.

Siddle experienced soreness during the fourth One-day international at Mohali, where he bowled only five overs.

The Victorian is the fourth player after paceman Brett Lee, all-rounder James Hopes and wicket-keeper Tim Paine to fly back home from the middle of the series.

Siddle took the decision after discussing his injury with physio therapist Kevin Sims.

‘Peter’s injury does not appear to be a serious problem but it is unlikely he will be able to safely bowl within the next week,’ Sims said. ‘That would, therefore, not allow him to have any further participation in the tour.’

‘With this in mind, we have made the decision that Peter will return to Australia where he will be reviewed by Cricket Australia medical staff to ensure he is available for selection at the beginning of the Australian summer.’

No replacement has been announced by Cricket Australia (CA), which is likely to take a decision in the next 24 hours.

Farooq to go to PM about Services’ no to cricket in Srinagar

Srinagar/New Delhi, Nov 3 – Reacting sharply to the Services’ team refusing to play a cricket match in Srinagar, a furious union minister and Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) chief Farooq Abdullah Tuesday said he would take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

‘To hell with them for that… Services is saying Kashmir is not normal,’ Abdullah said about the match that was supposed to signal the return of first-class cricket to the valley after five years.

He said that the refusal by the Services – which represents the Indian armed forces – projected ‘a bad image’ and that he would take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

‘Is this how we project Kashmir globally? What message will it send about Kashmir? I will take this up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,’ he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has already thrown out the Services team from this year’s Ranji Trophy championships.

The Ranji match was scheduled for Tuesday at the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar. The stadium has hosted two one-day internationals – India vs West Indies in 1983 and India vs Australia in 1986. The last Ranji match in Srinagar was held in 2004 between Jammu and Kashmir and Orissa.

The Services have refused to play in Srinagar apparently on security grounds. Assistant coach J.P. Pandey said the team management had told them to prepare for the next game and that the team was not travelling to Srinagar.

‘They didn’t even inform us earlier. We were waiting for them and were to welcome them,’ Abdullah, the union minister for new and renewable energy, told IANS.

He said if security was the reason ‘then it is frivolous’.

‘We successfully hosted the Ambassadors Autumn Autumn Golf Championship recently. The foreign envoys had no security concerns. We play lots of cricket there. Nobody has security concerns. The Services have only negated the prime minister’s remark that Kashmir is normal.’

He added that ‘some vested interests’ didn’t want Kashmir to be projected as a ‘normal place to visit’.

Abdullah also said that he would ask the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to look into the matter and investigate who stopped the Services from playing in the valley.

JKCA secretary Saleem Khan said everything was in place for the match. ‘The umpires were here, the match referee was here, and some TV cameras were also here. We were expecting a good crowd also. It would have boosted the sport in the valley,’ Khan said.

Haryana is scheduled to visit Srinagar Nov 10 for a match.

Services thrown out of Ranji Trophy for not playing in Srinagar

New Delhi, Nov 3 – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Wednesday disqualified Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) from this year’s Ranji Trophy tournament after the team’s refusal to travel to Srinagar for their match against Jammu and Kashmir.

SSCB was scheduled to play Jammu and Kashmir at Srinagar Nov 3-6 in the Plate Division of the Ranji Trophy season-opener Wednesday.

‘The SSCB has forfeited the match expressing their inability to send the team to Srinagar,’ BCCI secretary N. Srinivisan said in a statement.

‘The SSCB has therefore been disqualified from participating in the 2009-10 edition of the Ranji Trophy, in accordance with the rules of the BCCI pertaining to domestic tournaments,’ he said.

‘A decision on any further action against the SSCB will be taken by the working committee of BCCI.’

The match was supposed to herald the return of first-class cricket to the valley after five years.

Special Olympics begins in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, Nov 3 – The state-level Special Olympics started in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur town Tuesday, an organiser of the event said.

‘More than 200 special children from all over the state are participating in various events in the three-day Special Olympics that started this (Tuesday) morning,’ president of the Himachal Special Olympics Committee Mallika Nadda told IANS.

She said the state government has agreed in principle to allocate three percent of the annual sports budget for organising and promoting games for the children.

‘We are urging the state government to reserve three percent posts for those special children who won medals in various national and international events,’ she said.

Bilaspur is about 150 km from here.

Rookie Indian golfer to play in same event as Tiger

Shanghai, Nov 3 – Chinnaswamy Muniyappa has always dreamt of playing with Tiger Woods, but friends around him always though it was just another one of those wild dreams. But that dream is going to come true this week, when he tees up in the same event as the man who has ruled world golf for more than a decade.

Playing in his rookie season, Muniyappa had put his dream on the backburner while trying to secure his full Asian Tour card for 2010. But then suddenly in one magical week, the 32-year-old is not just sure of the card, but is also exempt for next two years and will now stand shoulder-to-shoulder with golf greats including Tiger and Phil Mickelson at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

‘My dream has always been to play with Tiger,’ Muniyappa said here Tuesday. ‘I can’t imagine that I’m going to be in the same event with him. ‘Last year, I was watching the big events on TV and I saw Jeev (Singh) winning in Singapore. I asked myself when will I have the chance to play in such big events and I worked really hard. Now, I’m here.’

He is amongst four Indians in the 11-man Asian Tour group at the Sheshan International Golf Club for the historic first staging of a World Golf Championship event in Asia.

Muniyappa earned his spot in the $7 million showpiece through his sixth place position on the Order of Merit at the cut-off point for qualifying, thanks to a career breakthrough victory in the Hero Honda Indian Open last month.

A man who caddied for one rupee during his childhood, he has had the opportunity to shoot for a staggering $13 million over the past three weeks on Tour. ‘I’m going to try to play my best golf here. In Singapore last week, I didn’t play well as I didn’t have a visa ready for China and I was worried about that. But it was a good experience competing on a tough course. I feel lucky to be here,’ said the man from Bangalore.

It has been hard work rather than sheer luck which has brought Muniyappa to golf’s biggest stage. He entered his first Asian Tour Qualifying School this year after mustering enough confidence to do so following a first domestic victory last year after more than 10 years in the play-for-pay ranks.

During the final round of Q-school, Muniyappa fell outside the top-40 with four holes remaining after a bizarre incident where he lost his ball despite hitting a perfect drive down the 15th fairway.

‘I declared a lost ball but when we walked up to my second ball, I found the first ball lying on the fairway! I was so angry and made double bogey,’ he said.

‘At that point, it was the most pressure that I’ve ever felt in my life, even more than what I experienced in the Indian Open play-off. If I didn’t make the top-40, I would not be able to play on the Asian Tour for a year. I knew I had to birdie a few holes coming in, and I managed to do so on 16 and 18.’

Muniyappa’s emergence certainly mirrors the wonderful rise of Indian talent coming through on the Asian Tour.

This week would mark the first time that four Indians, the others being Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa and Gaganjeet Bhullar, are featuring in a WGC event.

Bhullar, a talented 21-year-old who won the Indonesia President Invitational in July, said: ‘Four Indians in a WGC event, it’s the first time in our history. We are producing so many international players and it’s a great sign for Indian golf.

‘It’s all thanks to Jeev, Jyoti and Arjun (Atwal) who have played well over the years and given the rest of us the inspiration to emulate them,’ said Bhullar.

After earning his Major stripes when he qualified for the British Open this year, Bhullar will also be Tiger-hunting in Shanghai. ‘I’m so excited. I saw Tiger at the British Open and it was so inspiring for me. I’m looking for a great week.

‘It feels good to be in a WGC event. The last two years, I’ve worked really hard and I want to work harder to get into contention at the big events.’

The other Asian Tour stars in the field include Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, Chapchai Nirat and Prayad Marksaeng, Anthony Kang of the US, Japan’s Daisuke Maruyama, Singaporean Lam Chih Bing and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang.

Korea’s Yang Yong-eun, Asia’s first Major champion, will also challenge for the HSBC Champions title which he won in 2006.
