Spain’s recovery to start by early 2010, says PM

Madrid, Nov 4 (EFE) Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has said that Spain’s economy would begin emerging from recession ‘at the end of this year or the beginning of 2010′, though he acknowledged that unemployment – now nearly 18 percent – would remain high for some time.

The premier discussed the measures taken by the government, noting that they served to ‘alleviate the crisis’ but had not yet yielded net employment gains.

In remarks to the Senate, Zapatero responded to criticism from the conservative main opposition Popular Party by highlighting some initiatives, such as 18.75 billion euros ($27.37 billion) in government lending to businesses, households and regional administrations.

The State Local Investment Fund has kept 14,000 businesses, mostly small and mid-sized firms, from closing and provided jobs to some 421,000 people, the prime minister said.

Popular Party spokesman Pio Garcia Escudero, for his part, criticised the ‘errors’ made by the government ‘with its policy of deficits and debt that mortgage the future’.

The prime minister’s comments came hours after the Labour and Immigration Ministry released figures showing that unemployment increased by 98,906 people in October, compared to September, bringing the total number of jobless in Spain to more than 3.8 million.

The number of unemployed people in Spain has risen 35.14 percent in the past year.

Largest, costliest cruiser nearly ready for launch

Helsinki, Nov 4 (DPA) A thin layer of ice covers the teak wood deck of the cruise ship the Oasis of the Seas at the moment. But the cold weather is just one of the challenges a visitor will need to overcome if they want to visit the vessel: tins of paint are everywhere and sheets of tarpaulin make walking around the ship difficult.

By the start of November the flagship of the cruise company Royal Caribbean International (RCI) should be ready to set sail. When that day arrives the world will have a few more superlatives: never before has there been a cruise ship as large and as expensive to build as the Oasis. Right now construction and fitting out of the $1.4 billion vessel is underway at the Aker shipyard in Turku, Finland.

Over 2,000 people are working on the 360-metre-long and 71-metre-wide ship. All of them are wearing blue overalls and helmets – a few are even jogging around. ‘It’s as busy here as a freeway in Miami,’ says RCI spokeswoman Elisabetta Raffo. ‘But we are well on schedule.’

The Oasis is due to be christened in Fort Lauderdale Nov 30. On Dec 1 it will begin its maiden voyage to the Caribbean. Some of the islands in the Caribbean are quite small – too small almost when you know the ship can take up to 6,296 passengers and 2,160 crew.

That explains why the Oasis will only make three visits during its seven day cruise to St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Nassau in the Bahamas. The four day voyage will go to the Royal Caribbean port resort of Labadee on Haiti.

‘They are building new passenger terminals in the harbours so we won’t have to go through customs on board the ships in future,’ says hotel director Raimund Gschaider.

Luckily there is no pressing need to go on land as the Oasis of the Seas has plenty on offer and a week on board may end up passing by too quickly. Although not every guest will want to try out one of the ship’s two climbing walls, hang from a zip-line over the boardwalk or go ice skating, many will certainly be taking advantage of the pool and bar areas.

The biggest freshwater swimming pool at sea – called the Aqua Theatre – will also tempt a few to go diving for the first time. Passengers can even go for a walk in the ship’s Central Park; a park area the size of two football pitches with trees up to eight metres tall.

The Oasis looks smaller than it actually is and the architects managed to make the vessel look elegant despite its 18 decks. The ship’s interior is also almost transparent thanks to the wide-scale use of glass. The main restaurant can seat up to 2,000 guests but due to the clever design with corners, dividing walls and alcoves you only get to see a portion of it at any one time.

The ship is divided into seven ‘neighbourhoods’ and there are 24 restaurants to choose from. Among them the Rising Tide Bar will likely be popular as it will feature a lift that can carry up to 50 people from the fifth floor to Central Park.

The colour scheme is unobtrusive with cream, beige, sea green, blue, terracotta and rust red the main hues. The children’s areas are more colourful. Most of the 2,706 cabins have a balcony either facing inwards to the arcades or outwards to the sea.

The Oasis of the Seas will leave Finland at the beginning of November and travel to its home port of Fort Lauderdale via the Azores. During the 12-day voyage the crew will be introduced to the ship. In Florida there will be five days of finishing touches when plants will be brought on board.

Gisele Bundchen a step away from getting pilot license

London, Nov 3- Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has passed the first part of her helicopter flying exams just months after starting a series of lessons and her tutor insists she is a natural in flight.

‘Gisele hasn’t finished her license yet, but she did pass her written exam. Now, there is one more step along the way, the practical exam, which is coming up in another week,’ starpulse.com quoted Shoreline aviation president Keith Douglass as saying.

‘She has been doing an excellent job. She is very dedicated. She flies at least three days a week. Flying a helicopter isn’t easy – it is a handful, because you can’t stop flying and just cruise but she is doing great,’ he added.

At the same time Douglass admits that Bundchen’s huge baby bump is making her time in the cockpit tricky, as the 29-year-old supermodel is due to give birth to her first child with her American football player husband Tom Brady next month.

‘We have pilots that fly right up to the end of pregnancy. She doesn’t go very high, maybe 500 feet or 1,000 feet, which is nothing. She is always close and can get down quickly if she needs to. She is feeling great and looking great,’ said Douglass.

‘She has been doing an excellent job. But she is almost to a point where she is too big to be flying,’ he added.

Kate Hudson lost weight by giving up alcohol

London, Nov 3- Actress Kate Hudson had to give up alcohol to shed 20 pounds for her role in new movie ‘Earthbound’.

The Hollywood actress was forced to slim down to portray a terminally ill woman who falls in love with her doctor.

‘I love my glass of wine. I love tequila. To be in New York for two weeks and not have one beverage, I am not sure I have ever done that,’ femalefirst.co.uk quoted Hudson as saying.

‘My role demanded me to lose weight and the only way to do it was by cutting out drinking,’ she added.

Hudson, who is dating baseball star Alex Rodriguez, also talked about the joy at being a woman and the power she feels it gives her.

‘I love being a girl. I love clothes and I love the rituals of facials and body treatments. All the stuff girls get, make-up, scarves, hats. I love that we can be that powerful as a group,’ said Hudson.

Elizabeth Hurley shuns London for son

London, Nov 3 – British actress-model Elizabeth Hurley has turned her back on London living for the sake of her young son Damian.

The ‘Austin Powers’ star has lived in the British capital for years and bought a sprawling estate in Gloucestershire, England in 2003 so that she, husband Arun Nayar and her seven-year-old son could spend weekends and holidays in the countryside but now Hurley has made a permanent move to the property because Damian thrived away from city life, reports imdb.com.

‘I bought a farm about six years ago. We used to do London in the week, with my son at school there, and go every weekend but we got very stressed by it and in the end we just thought, ‘It’s so beautiful and Damian’s so much happier down here’. He loves the fresh air and running around outside, because he was so cooped up in London, so we made the big decision last Easter and moved down there full time,’ she said.

The 44-year-old initially struggled with the move but she’s convinced it was worth it.

‘It’s a big chance for a city girl, but I love it. It’s where my son’s supposed to be. It’s a little harder for me and my husband but it’s worth it,’ she said.

Indian outsourcing to figure at British ‘summit’ on Jaguar Land Rover

London, Nov 3 – British union leaders are to meet lawmakers from a key manufacturing belt Wednesday in what has been dubbed an ‘MPs’ summit’ to discuss the fate of thousands of workers facing job losses at Tata-owned Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) factories.

Although unions are not seeking to involve owners Tata Motors at this point in the negotiations, they will express strong reservations about reported long-term plans to outsource parts of JLR production to India and China, according to union officials.

The meeting, which comes after JLR announced plans to close down one of its factories by 2014, is expected to be attended by many of the 20 ruling Labour Party MPs representing the West Midlands and Northwest regions, the heartland of British manufacturing and a Labour votebank.

‘We are concerned at JLR plans to outsource production development to India and China, and the possibility of a production facility in China, which could pose a long-term threat to JLR in the UK,’ Des Quinn, Regional Industrial Organiser for Britain’s largest union Unite told IANS Tuesday.

Quinn also expressed concern about reported moves to ‘integrate’ the JLR brandname, saying, ‘The Tata management assured us two years ago [before acquiring JLR] that Jaguar and Land Rover are iconic brands and that the brand names will be protected.’

Quinn described the ‘summit’ as an ‘information meeting’, but it assumes added political significance as it comes some six months to the next British general elections, in which the beleaguered Labour Party will be counting on votes from West Midlands workers.

‘In the first half of next year, decisions will need to be taken on [JLR] investments. We will be looking for the government and MPs to support us. If they don’t, then they won’t get our support in the elections,’ Quinn warned.

Wednesday’s closed-door meeting is being held amid growing resistance from unions over JLR’s new business plan, including the planned closure of either the Jaguar plant at Castle Bromwich or Land Rover at Solihull and the veneer site at Browns Lane, Coventry.

Unions have also urged JLR owners Tata to consider bringing the European version of the Nano – the world’s cheapest car – to Castle Bromwich to stave off a potential shutdown.

Quinn revealed that JLR management had ‘lifted’ plans to make changes to employees’ pension scheme and introduce a new starter pay rates following protests from Unite.

A source close to JLR told IANS Tuesday: ‘JLR always had one plant too many.’

Beckham back at AC Milan in January

Rome, Nov 3 (DPA) David Beckham is due to be back at AC Milan where he will play from January to the end of the season on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy.

‘We are very happy to see David Beckham again donning the red-black jersey after the great experience of the past season,’ Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said late Monday.

‘We are certain that this period in Europe will help the footballer to take part in the next World Cup (with England in the summer of 2010) and then continue his career with Los Angeles Galaxy, whom we want to thank for their helpfulness.’

Beckham joined Milan last December and debuted in January after the Serie A winter break. He played 18 games, scoring two goals, before returning to Galaxy.

‘I needed the best possible opportunity to play the World Cup. Playing on loan with Milan will help me do it,’ the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player said.

‘I liked my previous experience at Milan very much and I can’t wait to meet again the team and the staff.

‘I want to thank (Galaxy president) Tim Leiweke and (coach) Bruce Arena for giving me this opportunity. I’m still tied to Galaxy and to the (US) Major League Soccer and I feel engaged as usual to favour the growth of football in America.

‘Now I’m totally focussed to end this season in the best possible way with my club and win the MLS Cup.’
