Federer roars away with win at Basle

Basle (Switzerland), Nov 3 (DPA) Roger Federer brushed off his game after a long autumn pause to clock his 16th straight victory at his home Swiss Indoors and start a run to the end of the Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) season.

The top seeded world number one needed just 66 minutes and a dozen aces to hammer Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 here Monday.

The Swiss earned his first two break points with aces, only to see them saved by the battling Belgian. But Federer put away the popular victory as Rochus fired wide to end it.

Federer has not played for six weeks since leading Switzerland to a place in the Davis Cup World Group in September. He missed Asian events last month to rest and get better acquainted with his new family of twin daughters born in last July.

‘I haven’t played in Switzerland in a year and it’s really so great,’ said a delighted Federer, whose match was introduced by a massed choir and an operatic performance of selections from Aida.

Organisers presented their heroic native son with a set of three mounted miniature gold trophies to represent his title success in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

‘I played pretty well today and I’m happy with how it went,’ said Federer, tuning up for the for next week’s Paris Masters and the year-end event in London by playing doubles this week with good friend Marco Chiudinelli.

Federer will next face Italian Andreas Seppi, who earned his place by beating Swiss number 148 Stephane Bohli 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

‘I felt so good out there,’ said the World No. 1. ‘This was my longest break, longer than at the end of a season. But I really needed it,’ said the winner of Paris and Wimbledon titles at mid-season.

An onslaught of 28 aces went for nought as huge Croatian server Ivo Karlovic was tamed 7-6(5), 6-4 by Frenchman Florent.

Serra, a lucky loser from qualifying rounds, turned the big man’s weapon in a superb defensive effort lasting just 67 minutes.

Federer last played on the ATP in the US Open final, scene of his loss to Argentine Juan Del Potro, who withdrew from this week’s event due to a continuing wrist problem and a psychological letdown since earning his Grand Slam title over the master.

This week is key for up to ten contenders for the last two spots open in the field, with points earned in Basle, Valencia and next week in the concluding event of the regular season, the Paris Masters, key indicators of who will make the cut for London.

Serb Novak Djokovic, whose only previous Basle appearance was a qualifying loss in 2004, plays as second seed behind Federer with 2005 champion Fernando Gonzales of Chile on third.

Federer now stands 56-8 on the season and has now won his 30th Basle match.

Czech court lifts final hurdle to EU treaty ratification

Prague, Nov 3 (DPA) The Czech Republic’s Constitutional Court Tuesday ruled the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty ‘not at odds’ with the Czech constitution, court chairman Pavel Rychetsky said.

That removes the final hurdle to ratification of the pact, which has been agreed by the bloc’s other 26 member states.

The closely-watched ruling clears the way for Czech President Vaclav Klaus, the sole obstacle to the pact’s coming to force, to ratify the accord. The EU wants the Lisbon Treaty to become valid Jan 1.

Klaus, a treaty opponent who has been holding out on his signature since the Czech parliament approved the treaty in May, effectively vowed to ratify the pact after the court gives him a green light.

It remains unclear when the president would do so. On Wednesday, Klaus is set to start a four-day working visit in the US. He is to return to Prague on Saturday evening, his website said.

On Monday, he is set to attend a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall collapse in the German capital.

Leaders of EU member states met another of the president’s conditions for his signature on the accord at their top-level Brussels summit Thursday.

They agreed to give the Czech Republic an exemption from a part of the treaty, EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, which Klaus views as a threat to Czech citizens’ property rights.

The controversial Lisbon Treaty – born out of a previous attempt to introduce a constitution to the EU, which was rejected in French and Dutch referendum – introduces posts of the bloc’s president, who would replace rotating presidencies, and a foreign policy chief.

It also replaces individual nation’s vetos with majority voting on a wide range of issues.

Old Beatles song took 40 years to complete

London, Nov 3 – A song sung by the late George Harrison of the Beatles was completed 40 years later.

Harrison — who died in 2001 — wrote down the first ten lines of a song called ‘Silence (Is Its Own Reply)’ on a piece of paper in the 1960s. It was thrown on the floor of Abbey Road studios before it got into the hands of author Hunter Davies who wrote a biography of the band in 1968, reports thesun.co.uk.

The lyrics were ignored till BBC Radio Merseyside host Spencer Leigh asked the songwriter Dean Johnson to finish them. Originally, it was thought that the lyrics were about love but it is now understood to be about Harrison’s uneasy relationship with band mate John Lennon.

‘I’m happy to say it’s only a dream, when I come across people like you, it’s only a dream and you make it obscene,’ the lyrics said.

Songwriter Johnson added: ‘The words were brutally honest and George was obviously writing from the heart. I tried my best to get into the mind of someone in his position.’

Mom-in-law gets money from Robbie Williams

London, Nov 3 – Gwen, mother-in-law of Robbie Williams, has been getting financial help from the singer to get out of debt.

Gwen is in danger of losing her house in Los Angeles. This is the main reason why Williams had to sell his house just months after he moved back to Britain, reports thesun.co.uk.

‘Debtors are literally on Gwen’s doorstep. Her house has been threatened with foreclosure. She doesn’t work and has relied on money from her divorce and from family to fund her lifestyle. But things have been getting tricky recently and she’s worried about the future.

‘As a result, Ayda is concerned about her mum and is feeling stressed. It’s a big part of why they have moved back to LA. Ayda feels she needs to be there to help her mum and she’s hoping Robbie will just pay off all her debts. Robbie has already been extremely generous. He and Ayda have offered for her to move in but that is not going to work as a permanent solution,’ a friend of Gwen’s daughter Ayda said.

Bee Gee singers reveal their feud

London, Nov 3 – Bee Gee singers have revealed that infighting between the Gibb brothers caused the group to split.

At times the fighting got so bad that their parents had to intervene. But now they want to get back after their band mate Maurice died. The brothers also compared their infighting to the Gallagher brothers of Oasis who also recently spilt, mirror.co.uk reports.

‘They’re just copying us. Oh, we’ve been through all that. To be honest, I’m surprised they stayed together for as long as they did and I think they’ve gone as far as they can be together,’ 59-year-old Robin said.

‘They remind us of ourselves, but on a more physically violent level. We’ve been there and we came full circle,’ 63-year old Barry added.

The Gibb brothers claim their friction is more from creative differences rather than conflict. Barry said: ‘Robin and I are both individuals but together we fire each other up. And if we can ignore the differences we have apart from music, we get the job done. Apart, I don’t know who I am.’

Robin added: ‘I don’t know who I am either. But I know who I am when we’re together performing. It’s just there. Whatever happens, how Barry thinks and feels will always be important to me because he’s part of my life. We created all of this.’

‘The more you try to forbid something and keep it secret, the more it becomes this thing you should be fearful of,’ she added.

Aguilera, 28, also said that she is shaping Max up to be a rocker when he grows up by playing him classic bands such as the Rolling Stones.

‘I play him Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. And if Max wants to have a music career, then I would say ‘Go for it’. I am really into encouraging him as an individual – whether he wants to be a vet, a scientist or a garbage man. As long as he has a passion for it,’ she explained.
