Lalit Modi gives nod for biopic

New Delhi, Nov 3 – Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi Tuesday gave his nod to Bollywood production house Percept Picture Company (PPC) for a ‘fictional biopic’ on his life, said a top official of PPC.

‘We had to wait for a bit but its through now. I had a meeting with him (Lalit Modi) in Mumbai at 11 in the morning and he is now very excited that he has committed for the film. It’s a fictional biopic like ‘Guru’ on Dhirubhai Ambani,’ joint managing director of PPC Shailendra Singh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

‘The film is a great mix of entertainment, sports and a whole emotional vibe. Lalit’s story has all the ingredients – rags to riches, fame, money and all that Indian audiences are going to enjoy watching. Indians at large would love to watch a good cricket marketing film,’ he added.

Titled ‘The Commissioner’, the script of the biopic is being written by Shridhar Raghavan and is ‘under development’.

‘We’ve got all the information and the research has been done. He (Raghavan) will take a couple of more months to be ready with the story and we should do the principal filming in 2010 and should be in a position to release the picture by end of the year,’ said Singh.

Asked about the director and the cast, he said: ‘We can’t announce the director yet because we are still to finalise the choice, as it’s first the script, then the director and then the casting for us. However, other than the lead, casting won’t be much of an issue.’

‘But the apt choice would be Shah Rukh Khan. He is India’s number one superstar and the minute we have the product in its true form of presentation, we would approach him for sure,’ he said.

Other actors in consideration for Modi’s role are ‘Irrfan Khan and Shahid Kapoor’.

Singh is also keeping a no holds barred budget for the film.

‘There will be no compromise in this film. Mr. Modi won’t allow me to compromise. It is a typical A-list Bollywood film but we can only get the true perspective of the costing once we have the script in hand,’ he said.

‘However, Lalit Modi practically lives in an aircraft, so that’s one of our headaches. In the IPL, he flew every evening and attended two press conferences in different cities. It involves a lot of filming,’ he added.

Is Modi also going to invest or appear in his life’s story?

‘He will have an option to invest financially if he chooses to… But the only appearance he is making is by allowing us to make the movie on him and subsequently by being present at the press conference to announce the same,’ said Singh.

Singh also hinted at a presence of major cricket players in the movie.

‘They are a part of the script because it happens to be based on IPL that has around 200 cricketers in it. They do happen to be a part of the cast unless any cricketer has a strict objection to being in the film,’ he said.

Ranji Trophy: Zaheer, Agarkar restrict Punjab

New Delhi, Nov 3 – Comeback paceman Zaheer Khan took three wickets and discarded all-rounder Ajit Agarkar four wickets as Mumbai restricted Punjab to 242 for nine on day one of the Super League Ranji Trophy match at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh Tuesday.

At Ahmedabad, Gujarat were reduced to 237 for seven by Orissa after they decided to bat first. Gujarat were stuggling at 89 for four when skipper Parthiv Patel(83) and Rujul Bhat(46) joined hands to steady the scoring. Ashraf Makda produced some late fireworks, smashing four sixes and a four in his unbeaten 23-ball 31 when stumps were drawn.

For Orissa, Dhiraj Singh took 4-88 and Debasis Mohanty 2-26.

At Poona Club Ground, Maharashtra were bowled out for 179 by Bengal. Winning the toss and batting, Maharashtra batsmen fell like nine pins with Azhar Ansari(52) and Sangram Dilp Atitkar (44) being the exceptions.

Ranadeb Bose was the best bowler for Bengal, taking five wickets for 67 while Ashok Dinda took 3-65. Bengal were 52 for two at stumps.

At Vadodara, Delhi posted a massive 300 for two after it decided to bat against Baroda. Opener Shikhar Dhawan was batting at 122 and Rajat Bhatia was unbeaten at 70.

At Hyderabad, Hyderabad (India) scored 237 for six against Himachal Pradesh. Electing to bat, the hosts were soon reduced to 121 for five before a 77-run stand between wicket-keeper Abhinav Kumar (70 not out) and Syed Quadri (47) pulled Hyderabad out of troubled waters .Vikramjeet Malik took two for 58 for Himachal Pradesh.

Australia fined for slow over rate

Mohali, Nov 3 – Australia have been fined for slow over rate during the fourth One-day international against India.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting was fined 20 percent of his match fee while his players were docked 10 percent. Australia defeated India by 24 runs at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here Monday.

Match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine after Ponting’s side was ruled to be two overs short of its target at the end of the match.

‘In accordance with the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct regulations governing over-rate penalties, players are fined five percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, while the captain is fined double that amount,’ ICC said in a statement.

Siddle new addition to Australia’s growing injury list

Mohali, Nov 3 – Fast bowler Peter Siddle has become the latest Australian to return home from the Indian tour because of a side strain.

Siddle experienced soreness during the fourth One-day international at Mohali, where he bowled only five overs.

The Victorian is the fourth player after paceman Brett Lee, all-rounder James Hopes and wicket-keeper Tim Paine to fly back home from the middle of the series.

Siddle took the decision after discussing his injury with physio therapist Kevin Sims.

‘Peter’s injury does not appear to be a serious problem but it is unlikely he will be able to safely bowl within the next week,’ Sims said. ‘That would, therefore, not allow him to have any further participation in the tour.’

‘With this in mind, we have made the decision that Peter will return to Australia where he will be reviewed by Cricket Australia medical staff to ensure he is available for selection at the beginning of the Australian summer.’

No replacement has been announced by Cricket Australia (CA), which is likely to take a decision in the next 24 hours.

Farooq to go to PM about Services’ no to cricket in Srinagar

Srinagar/New Delhi, Nov 3 – Reacting sharply to the Services’ team refusing to play a cricket match in Srinagar, a furious union minister and Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) chief Farooq Abdullah Tuesday said he would take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

‘To hell with them for that… Services is saying Kashmir is not normal,’ Abdullah said about the match that was supposed to signal the return of first-class cricket to the valley after five years.

He said that the refusal by the Services – which represents the Indian armed forces – projected ‘a bad image’ and that he would take up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

‘Is this how we project Kashmir globally? What message will it send about Kashmir? I will take this up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,’ he said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has already thrown out the Services team from this year’s Ranji Trophy championships.

The Ranji match was scheduled for Tuesday at the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar. The stadium has hosted two one-day internationals – India vs West Indies in 1983 and India vs Australia in 1986. The last Ranji match in Srinagar was held in 2004 between Jammu and Kashmir and Orissa.

The Services have refused to play in Srinagar apparently on security grounds. Assistant coach J.P. Pandey said the team management had told them to prepare for the next game and that the team was not travelling to Srinagar.

‘They didn’t even inform us earlier. We were waiting for them and were to welcome them,’ Abdullah, the union minister for new and renewable energy, told IANS.

He said if security was the reason ‘then it is frivolous’.

‘We successfully hosted the Ambassadors Autumn Autumn Golf Championship recently. The foreign envoys had no security concerns. We play lots of cricket there. Nobody has security concerns. The Services have only negated the prime minister’s remark that Kashmir is normal.’

He added that ‘some vested interests’ didn’t want Kashmir to be projected as a ‘normal place to visit’.

Abdullah also said that he would ask the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to look into the matter and investigate who stopped the Services from playing in the valley.

JKCA secretary Saleem Khan said everything was in place for the match. ‘The umpires were here, the match referee was here, and some TV cameras were also here. We were expecting a good crowd also. It would have boosted the sport in the valley,’ Khan said.

Haryana is scheduled to visit Srinagar Nov 10 for a match.

Services thrown out of Ranji Trophy for not playing in Srinagar

New Delhi, Nov 3 – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Wednesday disqualified Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) from this year’s Ranji Trophy tournament after the team’s refusal to travel to Srinagar for their match against Jammu and Kashmir.

SSCB was scheduled to play Jammu and Kashmir at Srinagar Nov 3-6 in the Plate Division of the Ranji Trophy season-opener Wednesday.

‘The SSCB has forfeited the match expressing their inability to send the team to Srinagar,’ BCCI secretary N. Srinivisan said in a statement.

‘The SSCB has therefore been disqualified from participating in the 2009-10 edition of the Ranji Trophy, in accordance with the rules of the BCCI pertaining to domestic tournaments,’ he said.

‘A decision on any further action against the SSCB will be taken by the working committee of BCCI.’

The match was supposed to herald the return of first-class cricket to the valley after five years.

We failed as a batting unit: Dhoni

Mohali, Nov 2 – Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed his batsmen for the loss against Australia in the fourth One-day international here Monday that allowed the visitors to level the seven-match series 2-2.

Chasing a victory target of 251, India were all out for 226 in 46.4 overs on a batting friendly track at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium (PCA).

‘We should have achieved the target and for that we had to bat 50 overs. But we failed as a batting unit. It was a fantastic One-day wicket,’ said Dhoni.

‘It is big set-back for the team. The batsmen got the starts but failed to convert them into partnerships,’ he said.

Dhoni, however, lauded his bowlers and fielders, who affected four run outs, for restricting Australia much below the par total on this ground.

‘Our bowlers did a good job and this was one of the best fielding efforts in the last one and a half years. But we have to show the same intensity in fielding regularly,’ said Dhoni.

The Indian captain also defended young fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who is going through a rough patch and gave away 42 runs in five overs.

‘Ishant was targeted by the Australians. And that can happen to any bowler on any day. They took the risk against Ishant and it paid off,’ he said.

Dhoni also added that Gautam Gambhir, who missed the match due to a neck injury, would be available for the fifth ODI in Hyderabad.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said it was a good win to level the series.

‘Ideally we should have scored more than 250. We were 30-40 runs short. But we bowled and fielded superbly and the bowlers stood up to the task,’ he said.

Australia level series 2-2 as batsmen let down India (Roundup)

Mohali, Nov 2 – Indian batsmen squandered a good start on a perfect batting strip to go down by 24 runs to Australia in the fourth One-day international at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium here Monday.

Chasing 251, India folded up for 226 in 46.4 overs after Sachin Tendulkar top scored with 40 and Virender Sehwag smashed 30 off 19 balls.

Harbhajan Singh, who scored a quick-fire 31 off 25 balls, and Praveen Kumar (16) once again raised hopes of a turnaround, similar to their heroic stand in the first ODI in Vadodara, but Shane Watson (3-29) stopped them short.

Australia, struggling with injury worries on the tour, came back to square the seven-match series 2-2 and stayed number No.1 ODI team.

Put in to bat by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Australia were all out for 250 in 49.2 overs as Cameron White scored a quick 62 off 71 balls and skipper Ricky Ponting 52. Man of the Match Watson chipped in with 49 runs.

Dhoni had no doubt in mind to opt for fielding, keeping in mind the heavy dew that would play an important role later in the night. His bowlers were bang on target and left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra was the pick of the lot with his three for 37 from his eight overs while off-spinner Harbhajan Singh got two for 48 from his 10 overs.

India got off to a rollicking start through Sehwag and Tendulkar. They added 40 runs at a quick pace.

Sehwag spoiled Mitchell Johnson’s birthday party by hitting him out of the attack, smashing the left-arm pacer for seven fours.

Ponting would not have brought in Doug Bollinger so early, if Johnson had not been treated so harshly. The bowling change did the trick as Sehwag failed to clear Watson at mid-off.

Bollinger struck again removing Virat Kohli.

Tendulkar looked set to achieve his personal milestone of reaching 17,000 runs, but a poor lbw decision by Sri Lankan umpire Asoka D Silva played spoilsport. TV replays clearly showed that the Nathan Hauritz delivery was going down the leg side. In retrospect Tendulkar’s dismissal might have changed the course of the match.

The in-form combination of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (26) and Yuvraj Singh (12) met a premature end as Ricky Ponting’s brilliant pick-up and throw found the left-hander short of crease.

Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja were back to the pavilion quickly and Australia looked in command before once again surviving the Harbhajan scare to pull through. Harbhajan hit five fours and a six during his exciting knock.

Earlier in the day, a rash of run-outs and a lower-order collapse saw Australia well short of the par total on this ground. The visitors folded up in 49.2 overs despite being well placed at 201 for four in 40 overs.

Indian bowlers, helped by some tight fielding, gave away just 49 runs picking up six wickets in 9.2 overs.

Both Nehra and Praveen Kumar gave India a good start, giving away only 37 runs in the first 10 overs. Nehra was the first to strike, trapping Shaun Marsh (5) leg before wicket in the eighth over.

Watson and Ponting played sensibly and milked the Indian bowlers for some easy runs for their 64-run second-wicket stand.

Watson was all set for a deserving half-century but Harbhajan struck with his second ball as the Australian edged to wicketkeeper Dhoni. Watson hit six fours during his 52-ball stay.

With two wickets down for less than 100 runs, Ponting and White did some repairing act but a direct throw from Jadeja ended the Australian captain’s 59-ball innings that had five boundaries and a six.

White and Michael Hussey (40) then plundered the spinners in the 73-run stand.

Hussey lofted Yuvraj Singh for a huge six over wide long-on. But Yuvraj had the last laugh after Hussey was caught by Ishant at deep mid-wicket. White was run out to a direct throw from Nehra.

Australia surprisingly opted for the last power play after the 44th over, but could muster only 23 runs from it.
