Australia lose way to end up on 250

Mohali, Nov 2 – A rash of run-outs and a lower-order collapse saw Australia ending up with 250 after promising much more in the fourth One-day international against India here Monday.

Australia were set for a big total after Cameron White scored a quick 62 off 71 balls and skipper Ricky Ponting made 52. But four run-outs and a lower-order collapse saw the visitors folding up in 49.2 overs, falling well short of the par total on this ground.

Put in to bat by India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Australia were well placed at 201 for four in 40 overs. But Indian bowlers, helped by some tight fielding, gave away just 49 runs picking up six wickets in 9.2 overs.

Brilliant throws from Ravindra Jadeja and Ashish Nehra brought an end to the innings of Ponting and White. Shane Watson (49) and Michael Hussey (40) gifted away their wickets.

Dhoni had no doubt in mind to opt for fielding, keeping in mind the heavy dew that would play an important role in the latter stage of the game. His bowlers were bang on target and left-arm seamer Nehra was the pick of the lot with his three for 37 from his eight overs while off-spinner Harbhjan Singh got two for 48 from his 10 overs.

Both Nehra and Praveen Kumar gave India a good start, giving away only 37 runs in the first 10 overs. Nehra was the first to strike, trapping Shaun Marsh (5) leg before wicket in the eighth over.

Watson (49) and Ponting played sensibly and milked the Indian bowlers for some easy runs for their 64-run second-wicket stand.

Ponting was severe on Ishant Sharma. The Australian captain smashed the young fast bowler in his first over for 13 runs that included a six and four. Watson was in no hurry and found the boundaries regularly.

Watson was all set for a deserving half-century but Habhajan struck with his second ball as the Australian edged to wicketkeeper Dhoni. Watson hit six fours during his 52-ball stay.

With two wickets down for less than 100 runs, Ponting and White did some repairing act with but a direct throw from Jadeja ended the Australian captain’s 59-ball innings that had five boundaries and a six.

White and Hussey (40) then plundered the spinners in the 73-run stand. Hussey’s quick-fire knock came up in 41 deliveries and he used his feet well against the slow bowlers. Hussey lofted Yuvraj Singh for a huge six over wide long-on. But Yuvraj had the last laugh after Hussey was caught by Ishant at deep mid-wicket.

Australia surprisingly opted for the last power play after the 44th over, but could muster only 23 runs from it.

King Khan has quiet b’day, but promises action in new year

New Delhi, Nov 2 – Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who turned 44 Monday, spent some ‘quiet time with family and friends’ on his birthday, putting behind a year of ups and downs and looking forward to a strong comeback.

With only one of his films – ‘Billu’ – hitting the screens in 2009, the actor has promised his fans more action in the coming two years.

‘I am a workaholic, but in the last year I couldn’t do much due to my shoulder problem. My team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) didn’t do too well and I shot for just one film ‘My Name Is Khan’. My injury also pulled me down in terms of my endorsements, but I had time to introspect and spend a quieter time at home with my children,’ Shah Rukh told reporters at a press conference in Mumbai Monday.

‘I feel more energetic and happy now and totally ready for a comeback with many projects in the next two years after this one-year break,’ he added.

On his birthday, Shah Rukh has chosen to spend ‘quiet time with his family and friends’ instead of partying hard, his spokesperson told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Shah Rukh was in the capital Sunday to kick off the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and cheer and egg on the runners. It seemed like he is still recovering from an arthroscopic surgery he underwent earlier this year for a nagging pain in his left shoulder.

The Bollywood superstar chose not to run at the marathon but caused quite a hysteria among the runners and watchers by just being present among them.

He said: ‘Though I could not run this time because of my shoulder and knee injury, I’ll try to be fit and run next year. Running is a spiritual experience.’

The past year also brought him disappointment when his cricket team KKR did not perform too well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

Shah Rukh Khan was also in the spotlight when he suffered a two-hour detention at the Newark Airport in the US in August, reportedly over his surname.

Otherwise, 2009 gave the actor many reasons to cheer as he became Dr Shah Rukh Khan when he was presented an honorary doctorate in arts and culture by the Bedfordshire University in London.

He was also bestowed with two honours by the South Korean government – an honorary belt in taekwondo and the title of an honorary ambassador for culture and tourism.

Shah Rukh even purchased a 20 million pound apartment in London.

Now, after spending quality time with his wife Gauri and children Aryan and Suhana, Shah Rukh is looking forward to the release of his various films like ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Happy New Year’ and ‘Don 2′.

Among these, his ‘My Name Is Khan’ is the most awaited as it will mark his coming together with actress Kajol for the first time in eight years. The two starred in five films together, including ‘Baazigar’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, all of which were superhits. ‘My Name Is Khan’ will release Feb 12, 2010.

Chinese women cricketers have stars in eyes

Mohali, Nov 2 – For Weng Meng and her teammates nothing could have been more thrilling than watching their favourite stars –Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar and Brett Lee — play ‘Shen Shi Yun Dong’ or the ‘noble game’ as cricket is known in the land of Mao.

Meng, here as the captain of the Chinese women’s team, is on an exposure trip to the Punjab Cricket Association. And the India-Australia clash here is their first experience of an international match.

The electric atmosphere at the packed stadium here gave them a sense of the frenzied popularity of cricket in the country.

‘It was an amazing experience. It was a deafening noise out there,’ Weng remarked. ‘Cricket is not so popular in China but here the fan following is huge.’

Meng, a left-arm pacer, is a big fan of Indian opener Sehwag and dreams of rattling the stumps of the Delhi dasher someday.

‘My role model in Brett Lee, but I am also a big fan of Sehwag. The way he tears apart all the bowlers is simply great. I wish I get a chance to bowl to him,’ Meng said.

Local lad Yuvraj is equally popular among Meng’s teammates. Hung Zhou follows the stylish left-hander closely and even attempts to copy his technique.

Zhou, who is the big hitter in the team, loves to see Yuvraj loft the bowlers.

‘Yuvraj is graceful. And being a left-handed batsman myself, it is a great opportunity to see him play. I also like (Sachin) Tendulkar but Yuvraj is very hot,’ Zhou said.

The 15 players are here as part of the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) programme to take the game to uncharted areas of the continent. They have been invited by (PCA) president Inderjit Singh Bindra, who is also the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) principal advisor and visited China in August to explore the possibilities of promoting the sport.

Mei Chuan says she has learned to play the spinners during the exposure trip.

‘In China we play on back-foot, but in India we are learning to play on the front foot. Playing spinners on the front foot is a challenging task and I would like to have a training session with Harbhajan Singh,’ she says.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also providing help to promote the game in China. They have appointed former national women’s team captain Mamtha Maben as the coach to help the Chinese Cricket Association (CCA).

Mamtha said the team is preparing for the 2010 Asian Games.

‘The BCCI is doing its bit in promoting cricket in China by providing equipments and coaches. Cricket in China is being played on astro-turfs. But in this trip, the girls got a chance to play on real pitches and it will boost their confidence. We had a good training session here and the ODI match will be a great learning experience for the girls,’ she said.

Harbhajan served court summons in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Nov 2 – A city-based voluntary organisation Monday handed over court summons to cricketer Harbhajan Singh at his hotel room here, for a civil case it had filed against him last year for hurting the religious sentiments.

‘The high court had given relief to Harbhajan Singh in the criminal case filed by us, in which we had accused him of hurting religious sentiments of people. Along with that, we had also filed a separate civil case against him to deter him from taking part in such activities in future,’ Global Human Rights council (GHRC) president Arvind Thakur, who filed the petition, told IANS here.

‘We have personally given summons to Harbhajan in the civil case today (Monday). The hearing is slated Dec 9. He has assured us of full cooperation and said that he would try to appear in the court if he is not engaged in anything else on the day,’ he added.

Thakur had gone to Harbhajan’s room in hotel Taj along with a court official and two deputy superintendents of police-rank officers of the Chandigarh police to serve the summons.

The cricketer is with the Indian team and here to play the fourth one-day match against Australia in neighbouring Mohali.

‘The court has also summoned TV actress Mona Singh and producer of Colors channel Dec 9. We had also tried to deliver summons to Mona Singh when she came here last month but she refused to accept it,’ Thakur added.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Mona Singh, of ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’ fame, had performed a dance number on the reality show Ek Khiladi, Ek Hasina as mythological Ravana and Sita in October last year.

Following this, the GHRC filed a complaint against Harbhajan, Mona Singh and the programme director of the TV channel Colors for hurting religious sentiments.

Pakistan Board seeks bilateral tours, India finds no time

Mohali, Nov 2 – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt met Indian cricket board president Shashank Manohar here Monday and requested for the resumption of bilateral ties between the two neighbours.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) spokesman Rajiv Shukla told reporters here Monday that Manohar explained to Butt that there was little possibility of a bilateral series between the two countries in the next seven-eight months due to India’s packed international calendar.

Butt was told that after the ODI series against Australia, India play a full series against Sri Lanka followed by the World Twenty20 in West Indies.

‘The two countries will explore the possibility of a bilateral series next season,’ said Shukla.

The BCCI president also said the talks would be held, keeping in mind the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

The BCCI refused to send a team to tour Pakistan earlier this year due to tension between the two countries in the wake of November 26 terrorist attack in Mumbai that claimed 170 lives.

The PCB chairman, according to Shukla, told the Indian board cheif that bilateral ties between the two countries are important for cricket.

The latest Future Tour Programme (FTP), drafted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), has no space for a India-Pakistan series till 2012.

Seven live cartridges in Kotla stadium before India-Australia ODI

New Delhi, Nov 2 – Seven live cartridges were found in a stadium packed with over 40,000 spectators, just two hours before the India-Australia second one-day international cricket match here Saturday, police said Monday.

The bullets were recovered during a search of the Feroz Shah Kotla cricket stadium by the personnel of bomb detection squad (BDS) and dog squad.

‘It was a routine check when our men came across seven cartridges wrapped in paper and placed in the second floor bathroom of the stadium. These bullets have an effective range of 10-15 feet if fired from close range,’ a police officer said.

The live cartridges were found around 12.30 p.m., just two hours before the second India-Australia ODI was to begin.

‘We have registered a case at the I.P. Estate police station under arms act. We are trying to ascertain how these bullets reached the stadium and since when they were lying there,’ the officer said.

The police have sought a list of people who work in the stadium and also about those who have access inside.

Senior officers said the bullets may have been kept to cause a disturbance during the match.

‘There could be many possibilities to it. It could be for firing blindly at masses to cause stampede or bullets could have been kept a long time ago with an intention of hiding them. So we were working on all possible angles,’ the officer added.

The police said the matter was kept secret as it could have created unnecessary panic among the people and authorities Saturday.
