I wonder why models don’t smile on ramp: Neha Dhupia

New Delhi, Oct 25 – Former Miss India Neha Dhupia, who flashed a million dollar smile while sashaying down the ramp Sunday at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) for designer Kavita Bhartia, wonders why models don’t flash a smile during catwalk.

‘I have always wondered why models always walk the ramp with a straight face. Why don’t they ever smile? Even during my modelling days, I used to wonder about it,’ Neha said after the show.

‘But then I guess, if beautiful models will start smiling, they will completely take the show away from the designer’s clothes,’ she added.

Dressed in a black ruffled dress teamed up with a bust jacket-like top with metallic gold embellishments on it, Neha delivered a perfect catwalk sans any extra drama on the stage.

‘I was very impressed with Kavita’s collection and I was eyeing this gold jacket when I came in. I didn’t know it was for me. I was really glad that she had planned that I will wear it,’ said Neha.

The actress, who is awaiting the release of her film ‘De Dana Dan’, was not even a wee bit nervous before walking the ramp. ‘I was excited,’ she said.

Talking about her movie, she said: ”De Dana Dan’ is an out and out comedy. It has a lot of people in it. The phrase – ‘The more the merrier’ perfectly suits it. But I hope people enjoy the film.’

Neha, who has been chosen by Hollywood actress-singer Jessica Simpson to be the Indian Beauty ambassador for her TV show ‘Price Of Beauty’, has five films in the pipeline to be released within six months.

It includes ‘Raat Gayi Baat Gayi’, ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Saala’, ‘Raftaar 24X7′. She will also feature in Vipul Shah’s ‘Action Replay’ along with Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar.

‘ ‘Action Replay’ is expected to release next summer,’ she said.

‘Bal Ganesha 2′: Fun animation film for kids (IANS Film Review)

Film: ‘Bal Ganesha 2′; Cast: Animated; Director: Pankaj Sharma; Rating: ***

More than half a dozen animated films released in 2008. However, most of them failed to make a mark, mainly because of sub-standard animation.

Now in 2009, comes the next instalment of ‘Bal Ganesha’ and among all the animation films based on mythological themes, this is easily the best India has seen so far.

The sequel to ‘Bal Ganesha’ has not really been promoted. But the animation is of high order, characters are fleshed out well, the story is interesting, the music is catchy and most important there are enough rib tickling moments that will keep kids rolling with laughter.

Cynics may compare the storytelling and animation of ‘Bal Ganesha 2′ with that of Hollywood films.

Though ‘Bal Ganesha 2′ may not be at the same level as its Hollywood counterparts, it does move in that direction.

Film maker Pankaj Sharma sets the entire team of narrators, a bunch of mice, in the present time and uses ‘tapori’ (street) language to make the narrative more crisp.

For those who missed the first instalment of ‘Bal Ganesha’, there is a quick recap.

The film focuses on three stories, which are basically episodes from the life of Ganesha when he was a kid. These stories revolve around playing games with a cat, writing of Mahabharat and battling with a demon.

The stories all have twists in the end. They also have messages but thankfully that is not thrust down the throat of the audience.

It is clear that Sharma has understood the pulse of his target audience.

Also, the song ‘De Taali’, which comes in the second half of the film is intelligently used to bring in a desired break between the stories.

Overall, ‘Bal Ganesha 2′ is pretty good and deserves a watch.

Miller’s Broadway debut slammed by critics

London, Oct 24 – Hollywood actress Sienna Miller’s Broadway debut in ‘After Miss Julie’ has been hit by a string of bad reviews with critics mauling her performance.

The actress stars in Patrick Marber’s adaptation of the August Strindberg classic ‘Miss Julie’. On the opening night Thursday Miller’s performance came under the spotlight, with critics labelling her ‘second rate’, reports contactmusic.com.

‘Ms. Miller registers as a healthy, sane young woman with good diction, good posture and great legs. Commendable as these attributes are, they are of limited use in portraying a tautly wound, death-courting neurotic who is eaten alive by her own demons,’ wrote Ben Brantley, of the New York Times.

‘If Julie is written as clashing chords of conflicted impulses, Ms. Miller plays them like a novice at a piano, plunking down each note loudly and individually,’ he added

Added Wall Street Journal theatre critic Terry Teachout: ‘A model turned second-tier movie star, all she does is stalk around the stage striking vampy poses… she has no more business playing a classic stage role than I have posing for the cover of Vogue.’

‘After Miss Julie’ runs until Dec 6.

James Bond studio denied $300 mn set extension bid

London, Oct 24 – Hollywood movie bosses have scrapped plans for a $300-million extension at the studio where the James Bond films are shot after they were denied permission to build on protected rural land.

Executives at Pinewood studios in Buckinghamshire, Britain applied to authorities to create a new 100-acre set on an unurbanised area, known as a greenbelt, close to its current location, reports gossip.ie.

The extension would have created a huge new film set location, including streetscapes of Venice, New York, Paris and even a Roman amphitheatre.

The proposal also included plans to build 1,500 houses to be used as filming locations in a project which would have created 630 new jobs.

But the authorities have rejected the application, insisting the scheme would have caused ‘significant degradation’ to the local environment and put wildlife at risk.

However, bosses at the studio where ‘The Dark Knight’ was also filmed have refused to give up and are currently drawing up new plans for a ‘greener’ design.

‘This project is of national significance and of great benefit not only to our community and region but also to the UK and its creative industries… We remain committed to the vision of this project and to developing and sustaining UK creative industries at Pinewood for the future,’ said Pinewood’s group director of corporate affairs, Andrew Smith.

Bale used Cruise as inspiration for ‘American Psycho’

London, Oct 24 – Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise was the inspiration for Christian Bale’s frightening portrayal of a bloodthirsty maniac in ‘American Psycho’, according to the movie’s director Mary Harron.

‘The Dark Knight’ actor took on the role of Patrick Bateman in the 2000 thriller, playing a wealthy young investment banker who apparently leads a double life as a vicious multiple murderer, reports hollywood.com.

Director Harron has revealed Bale based the character’s smarmy persona on Cruise after seeing the Hollywood superstar give an interview on a US TV channel.

‘We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out the right way to behave,’ she said.

‘And then one day he called me and he had been watching Tom Cruise on David Letterman, and he just had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes, and he was really taken with this energy,’ she added.
