Five arrested for lynching youth in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24 – Five people have been arrested here for lynching a youth on suspicion of theft, police said Saturday.

Manoj Prusty, 27, was caught by the residents of Turiput slum in Mancheswar industrial area here early Friday while he was allegedly trying to lift a cycle from the locality.

‘The residents tied Manoj and beat him for several hours after which he succumbed to his injuries,’ Manoj’s mother Jhumar Prusty told IANS.

Police Inspector Bishnu Charan Mishra said: ‘We have registered a murder case and detained five people from the slum.’

Orissa farmers hold unique bull protest

Bhubaneswar, Oct 24 – Hundreds of farmers in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district staged a unique protest to highlight the damage caused to their vegetable crops by stray bulls and monkeys. They marched to the block development officer’s office with 50 bulls in tow.

The farmers staged the protest in front of the office of the block development officer at Balikuda town, some 75 km from state capital Bhubaneswar. They said they were forced to take the measure as their repeated appeals for help yielded no results.

Stray bulls and monkeys have been damaging and eating vegetable crops in more than 500 villages in the coastal district since the past several years. ‘This year they have already damaged and eaten the vegetable crops in several villages,’ farmer leader Prakash Sahani told IANS.

The block development officer Nigamananda Panda said steps are being taken to remove the stray bulls and moneys to other location so that they do not damage the fields.

‘We have sought the help of the local veterinary officials in this regards,’ Panda, who was given a memorandum by the farmers, said.

Three Maoists held in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 – Three suspected Maoists were arrested Friday from Rayagada district in Orissa, police said.

‘We arrested three Maoists in an early (Friday) morning operation. The three were named in many police cases,’ said Rayagada Superintendent of Police Ashish Singh. Rayagada is more than 300 km from here.

According to the police, of the three arrested men, one is a Maoist cadre while two are sympathizers.

Central Bank to help Orissa’s small enterprises

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 – The Orissa government has tied up with the state-run Central Bank of India to strengthen credit flow to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in the state.

According to the agreement, the bank will deploy funds worth Rs.25,000 crore for MSMEs on incremental basis over a period of five years and open new branches in industrial areas, a senior official of Industrial Investment Promotion Corp of Orissa Ltd (Iipcol) told IANS.

The deal was signed by the bank and the state-run Iipcol at the state secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Post-agreement, it would be easier for entrepreneurs to get credit facilities from the bank, he said.

‘Within 30 days of the receipt of a proposal, the bank will provide banking and other related facilities.’

Central Bank will also set up entrepreneurship development institutions or rural development and self-employment training institutes to train potential entrepreneurs, he said.

‘The Orissa government will provide them the required land at potential locations. The bank has also assured the government to establish dedicated branches for MSMEs in industrial areas,’ the official added.

Maoists threaten to kill Hindu cleric in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 – A Hindu cleric in Orissa Friday said he received a letter from Maoist guerrillas, threatening to kill him like they killed Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati.

Swami Arupananda, president of the Nikhil Utkal Math-Mandiradhish Sevasangha, said he has informed the state police authorities about the letter and sought protection.

Security has been beefed up around the house of Swami Arupananda after the threat to his life, police inspector Tapan K. Mohanty told IANS.

‘I have received the letter in Oriya recently through post. They have said they will kill me the way they killed Swami Laxamananda Saraswati,’ Arupananda told IANS.

VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides were killed Aug 23 last year in Kandhamal district allegedly by Maoist rebels, triggering communal violence in Orissa.
