Australia survive Harbhajan, Praveen onslaught, clinch Ist ODI

Vadodara, Oct 25 – Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar’s 84-run onslaught brought India to the edge of a sensational victory against Australia, but the hosts tripped in the thrilling final over and went down by a mere four runs in the first of the seven-match One-Day International cricket series here Sunday.

Australia were cruising to victory when India, chasing a tough 293, looked down and virtually out at 201 for seven. But Harbhajan (49 off 31 balls) and Praveen (40 not out of 32 balls) rose to the occasion and smashed 84 runs off 57 balls for the eighth wicket to bring the hosts to the threshhold of victory.

With 29 required in the last 12 balls, the duo smacked Shane Watson for 20. But Peter Siddle held his nerve and rattled the stumps of Harbhajan with the second ball of the last over, conceding only four runs.

Harbhajan, who enjoys playing against the Australians, struck four fours and three sixes in his blistering knock while Praveen hit five fours and a six.

Harbhajan and Praveen were lackslutre with the ball, but made up with their superb batting effort to give a rousing start to the series.

The late Indian flourish notwithstanding, Australia were on the top of the match for most period.

Ricky Ponting led the charge, scoring 74 off 85 balls after deciding to take the first strike on a batting wicket and fast outfield. Ponting and Tim Paine (50) built a strong foundation adding 97 runs for the second wicket. Cameron White (51) kept the momentum in the middle overs and Michael Hussey (73) gave the late thrust to the score.

Virender Sehwag (13), making his international comeback, began with a flourish of fours against Brett Lee, but soon gave his wicket to the fast bowler. Sachin Tendulkar (14) struck two classy fours before Ricky Ponting held a sharp reflex catch at short cover to remove him. Gautam Gambhir (68) and Virat Kohli (30) revived the innings with a 58-run stand.

Gambhir, who hit six fours and one six in 85-balls, added 64-runs with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (34), but was dismissed by Mitchell Johnson (2-59) at the crunch time. Suresh Raina (9), Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja left trying to accelerate. With nothing to lose, Harbhajan and Praveen played their strokes freely and pressure on Australia showed with the 20,000 fans cheering lustily.

Earlier, Nehra (2-58) gave India the right start, trapping Shane Watson leg-before with a sharp incoming delivery.

It remained India’s only success till the 19th over as Ponting with newcomer Paine powered Australia’s run pace. Ponting, who struck eight fours and two sixes, batted with authority. Paine grew in confidence watching the veteran play some beautiful shots through the off-side. Australia cruised to 50-runs in 8.5 overs.

Paine was dismissed by Sharma immediately after he reached his career’s third half- century.

Ponting then added 49 runs with White, who took some time to adjust to the wicket. The Australian captain was well on course for a century when Ravindra Jadeja (1-39) reaped the reward of maintaining a good line, trapping him lbw.

Australia slowed down a bit after Ponting’s fall and when Nehra dismissed White, who added 56 runs with Hussey, it seemed the visitors would not near the six-run per over mark.

But Hussey led the assault in the final overs, stroking eight fours and one six for his 54-ball 73 to lift the Australian total.

The visitors would have crossed the 300-run target had it not been for the last over bowled by Ishant (3-50) in which he gave just one run and accounted for the wickets of Hussey and Lee.

Ponting, Hussey lead Australian charge

Vadodara, Oct 25 – Australia’s four top-order batsmen struck half-centuries to set up a 293-run target for India in the first of their seven One-day international cricket match here Sunday.

Skipper Ricky Ponting decided to take first strike on a batting wicket and fast outfield and led the Australian charge, scoring 74 off 85 balls. Ponting and Tim Paine (50) added 97 runs for the second wicket after Shane Watson was dismissed by Ashish Nehra in the second over.

Cameron White (51) and Michael Hussey (73) held the innings in the middle overs, before the latter gave a late charge as Australia finished at 292 for eight.

The visitors would have crossed the 300-run target had it not been for the last over bowled by Ishant Sharma in which the medium-pacer gave just two runs and accounted for the wickets of Hussey and Brett lee.

Sharma (3-50), who had drawn flak for his lacklustre performance in the Champions Trophy, was the pick of the bowlers Sunday.

Ravindra Jadeja (1-39), fitting in the role of the fifth bowler, bowled a economical spell and contained the Australian batsmen in the middle overs.

In contrast, mainline off-spinner Harbhajan Singh (1-57) was far from convincing and got the stick.

Praveen Kumar, who was handed the new-ball, was disappointing and went for 77 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Kumar was wayward and lacked the pace to have any impact on the batsmen.

Nehra gave India the right start, trapping Shane Watson leg-before with a sharp incoming delivery.

It remained India’s only success till the 19th over as Ponting along with newcomer Paine laid a strong foundation. Ponting, who struck eight fours and two sixes, batted with authority and was not hesitant to play his strokes.

The Australian captain was well on course for a century when Jadeja reaped the reward of maintaining a good line, trapping him lbw.

Australia slowed down a bit after Ponting’s fall and when Nehra dismissed White, who added 56 runs with Hussey, it seemed the visitors would not near the six-run per over mark.

India challenge Australia for ODI top spot

Vadodara, Oct 24 – There is an air of excitement as the seven-match India-Australia series gets underway here Sunday. The teams have a lot to play for as both will be fighting it out to be the number one One-Day side.

The series has also acquired significance because of the ongoing debate over the future of One-Day cricket in the light of the surge of Twenty20. But the poor turnout for the just-concluded Champions League might have saved the 50-overs cricket. And if the series goes to the wire then the format will get a fresh lease of life.

The India-Australia rivalry has become cricket folklore, challenging popularity of even the India-Pakistan battles, such has been the intensity of cricket between the two countries in recent years.

After the pre-series verbal sparring, the teams are all set for the on-field exchanges in the first game here Sunday.

Ricky Ponting’s team have a more balanced look now after being jolted by the loss to South Africa in back-to-back home-and-away series. Australia have since beaten Pakistan at neutral counrty United Arab Emirates, embarrassed England 6-1 and won the Champions Trophy in South Africa to be back to the top of the rankings. They have won 14 of their last 17 matches.

As for India, they did well to beat New Zealand and West Indies before winning the tri-series in Sri Lanka beating the hosts and New Zealand, but their charismatic captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni drew flak for the the team’s dismal performance in the two International Cricket Council (ICC) events the Twenty20 world championship and the Champions Trophy which were won by Pakistan and Australia respectively.

India were not at their full strength at both the ICC events as two of their most explosive batsmen Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh were sidelined with injuries. They are back and that should inspire the team.

Yuvraj, who missed the Champions Trophy with a finger injury, is unlikely to be rushed straightaway.

‘All I can say is that Yuvraj will surely be available for the second match,’ said Dhoni who himself took bad blow on the knee from pacer Munaf Patel in the nets.

Fast bowling, however, has been an area of concern for India. Ishant Sharma has not been at his best and Zaheer Khan’s absence has weakened the attack. The recall of Munaf should bolster the new-ball attack with Ashish Nehra filling the gap left by Zaheer admirably.
